Dear parents and/or guardians:

The Texas Department of Agriculture daily meal requirements have changed in accordance to the final rule (77 FR 4088) titled Nutrition Standards in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs. This rule was established as a result of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act in 2010. According to this rule student serving sizes have changed to reflect below:
  • Meat/Bean-1 ounce
  • Grain-1 ounce
  • Milk-8 ounces
  • Fruit-1/2 cup or Veggie-1/2 cup or 1/4 cup fruit+1/4 cup Veggie Combo

For lunch the OFFER option is utilized in which the students picks at least three out of the five components which must contain a serving of fruit or veggie or combo of both. Students are allowed to pick up to all five components.

Below is a friendly handout to help visualize to the portions on your students plate plus a friendly activity sheet.
